(Sep. 10, 2025) In celebration of Black Philanthropy Month, the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis participated in Give 8/28, a day of giving to support local Black-led, Black-benefiting nonprofits on August 28.

In its second year, the Community Foundation’s 2025 campaign supported 100 distinct nonprofits with $2,978,087!

“Intentionality matters,” said Veronica Jamison, Vice President of Philanthropic Services for the Community Foundation.

“When we decided to enhance our efforts around this campaign and uplift Black-led and Black-benefiting nonprofits that are working hard every day to support Memphians, the community respected our commitment, recognized the need for funding equity, and responded generously.”

In support of this effort, the Community Foundation developed a directory of more than 200 area Black-led nonprofits. Donations comprising the tally include those from Community Foundation fund holders in August and community donors who gave through LIVEGIVEmidsouth.org or through reported gifts to the nonprofits directly on 8/28.

In addition to encouraging donors to contribute, the Community Foundation awarded $5,000 total in grants to five organizations, randomly selected from the 200+ local, Black-led nonprofits with profiles on LIVEGIVEmidsouth.org. They are 901 BLOC Squad, Dream Academy Learning Center, Make A Man Academy, REACH Memphis, and Reaching Back, Inc.

The growth of the local Give 8/28 campaign has been significant. During the inaugural effort in 2024, the campaign during Black Philanthropy Month raised $2.1 million.

Among the additions in 2025, the Community Foundation held its first Powered By Us: Black Generosity in Memphis Symposium on Aug. 22. The event included prominent speakers sharing expertise in faith-based giving, generational wealth, supporting Black-owned businesses, and everyday giving and acts of care. The symposium quickly reached capacity, and planning is underway for next year.
