(Sept 12. 2024) For many years, Agnes Gordon Stark has been a dedicated figure in Memphis’ arts community, both as an artist and a champion of local organizations. Originally from Baltimore, she found her creative home in Memphis, where she established her pottery studio in 1970. Though her career began in theater—working as a production assistant and lighting designer—pottery became her true calling. The shift from theater to ceramics allowed Stark to build a lifelong career and connection to the Memphis art scene.
Her dedication to the craft is rooted in a traditional approach. “I work with an old-fashioned kick wheel and mix my own clay and glazes,” she explains. This hands-on process reflects the same commitment she shows to supporting other artists. As a former president of both the Memphis Potters’ Guild and the Memphis Association of Craft Artists, Stark has long been a leader within the local arts community.
Stark’s work has been featured in juried exhibitions across the country, and she was selected to represent the United States at the World Crafts Council in Japan and Austria. But beyond her personal achievements, she is equally committed to uplifting the broader creative community. She’s been a strong supporter of organizations like the Dixon Gallery and Gardens and the Metal Museum. “Memphis has been very good to me,” she says. “They’ve supported me, and that’s why I support the theaters, museums, and arts organizations in this city.”
After her husband’s passing, Stark began working with the Community Foundation to manage her philanthropic efforts. “The Community Foundation has been amazing,” she shares. “They help ensure my contributions go to the arts organizations I care about, so they can continue thriving.”
Financial support is one way she shows her dedication to local artists. “I may not have a lot of money, but I support as many arts organizations as I can because I know how hard it is for artists to make a living,” she says.
For Stark, supporting the arts is about ensuring the creative spirit of Memphis continues to grow. “Being an artist is hard, but it’s worth it. The arts enrich our community in ways that are hard to measure, and that’s why I keep supporting them.”
Agnes Gordon Stark’s dedication to both her craft and the Memphis arts community continues to inspire and support local artists. To learn more about her work, visit agnestarkpottery.com.
