For Black-led nonprofits
Give 8/28 is a national day of giving on August 28 that uplifts Black-led and Black-benefiting nonprofits as part of the broader Black Philanthropy Month movement.
The Community Foundation proudly supports this effort to celebrate Black generosity and address funding inequities that persist in the sector. By joining the campaign, your organization can raise visibility, share your impact, and connect with donors.

Promote the campaign to your networks, share your story, and direct supporters to the local directory at LIVEGIVEmidsouth—where 200+ Black-led organizations, including yours, can be discovered and supported.
Join the list
To prepare for Black Philanthropy Month and Give 8/28, we’re updating our list of Black-led organizations and inviting others to join. Please complete this short form to confirm your current status or express interest in being featured.
A nonprofit is considered Black-led if the most senior leader (e.g., Executive Director, CEO) is Black and the leadership team includes other Black leaders. The board should also reflect the community served — particularly when the organization’s work centers on Black communities.

Give 8/28 eligibility FAQ
A nonprofit is considered Black-led if the executive leader is Black and the leadership team & Board includes other Black leaders.
The Community Foundation’s 2025 Give 8/28 campaign supported 100 distinct nonprofits with $2,978,087! Learn more.
This year, we’re working to expand our impact—and your visibility!
We’re rebuilding our list of Black-led nonprofits using an updated definition (developed by the Black-Led Nonprofit Leadership Alliance).
As defined by the Black-Led Nonprofit Leadership Alliance, a Black-led nonprofit is one where:
- The CEO, Executive Director, or President is Black
- The executive leadership team is majority or plurality Black
- The governing board is majority Black
A nonprofit’s mission does not have to specifically focus on Black communities to qualify.
This definition was informed by community input and extensive conversations led by the Black Nonprofit Leadership Alliance (BNLA). Through a series of convenings and a yearlong research process, BNLA gathered feedback from local nonprofit leaders to better define what it means to be Black-led in our region.
The Black-Led Nonprofit Leadership Alliance (BNLA) is a group of Black nonprofit leaders convened in 2024 by the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis. The group came together to discuss the challenges facing Black-led organizations and to develop recommendations that support CFGM’s broader equity efforts.
To ensure accuracy, equity, and transparency, we rebuild the Black-led spotlight list annually. Only organizations who complete the verification form will be featured in this year’s campaign—even if they were featured in past years.

We strongly recommend setting up a Stripe account so donors are able to give directly through your profile using credit/debit card, Apple Pay, and other virtual methods.
In the meantime, we share with potential Give 8/28 donors: Please note: If an organization doesn’t have a Fund this Organization button, it doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong. The agency just hasn’t set it up yet. If you’d like to make a donation, please contact the organization directly.
