Helping hungry neighbors: MemphisCares impact

When SNAP benefits were suspended in early November, the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis and United Way of the Mid-South, in partnership with Mayor Paul Young and the City of Memphis, joined forces to launch MemphisCares, a community fund to support families experiencing food insecurity.

We are proud to report that individual citizens joined corporate, foundation, and government partners to come together to commit $3,556,293 to make sure families could still put food on the table. That includes $340,401 from fund holders at the Community Foundation as well as $100,000 from our FOREVER Funds’ Rapid Response Fund.

Through the unified campaign and outpouring of support, MemphisCares provided 4,500 families directly with debit cards for groceries through 13 partner agencies. In addition to campaign support for the Mid-South Food Bank, the Memphis City Council committed additional funds to four other social service organizations to serve their client families throughout the holiday season. They are Community Alliance for the Homeless, Feed the Needy, Hospitality Hub, and MIFA.

Thank you for your incredible generosity. MemphisCares turned hunger into hope and is making a real difference for our neighbors in a time of urgent need.
